Because my daughter wants an iPod for Christmas (she's 6! can you believe it?) and I didn't want to spend what iPods cost, I've been doing research on MP3s. I'm looking for a 2 GB, but a sale came up on a 8 GB that I thought I'd tell you about because normally these are crazy expensive. It's the Sony Walkman MP3 is actually rated really good. Both my 9 and my 8 year old have MP3 players. We just got cheap ones,(M's is a refurbished one that I got for less than $15) and they are perfect. We didn't want to spend the money on a "real" ipod, but didn't like that the ipod shuffle didn't have a screen to help them choose what song they want.
You can find lots of cheap MP3 players, in the 1-2 GB range, with a screen to choose what song they want- and both of our kids' came with headphones. . .
